We watched Star Trek the other night & I must say it wasn’t easy to do this post.  At first, I was thinking, “Oh no!  I should definitely consider the tiniest details & rules the movie has because of its super obsessed fandom!” just in case someone from there accidentally stumbles upon this comic.  Then I realized, what was more difficult was trying not to Google Chris Pine,watch Chris Pine interviews while doing this post!  I’ve been a Chris Pine fan since his appearance on Princess Diaries. Haha. *Now I totally sound like a teenager.*  Anyway, somewhere between watching the Starship Enterprise fall from the sky into some fluffy clouds and wondering if this was the most dramatic Star Trek movie ever made (I needed a board to count how many times all the leading men cried), here are five things you would have probably wished for after watching Star Trek!

Every Friday, you’ll see your social networking feeds being deluged with lines like, “I love Fridays!” “Hooray! It’s Friday!” or “Hello Friday!”.  Why don’t people actually ever greet Mondays?   If the days of the week were in one school, Friday would be the pop kid and Monday will be the awkward outcast suffering from low self-esteem having self-pity for breakfast.  *I should actually add ‘personifying lifeless things’ to my list of hobbies*  Then again, asking why no one loves Mondays is like asking why people walk instead of float or swim on l’air.

More than 12 hours from now, it’ll be another start of the week and around 8 hours from now, as soon as the sun sets, everyone will have to start to say good bye to the weekend again!  However, what is life without contrasts? *Since when did we get philosophical anyway?* We always have to thank boring sleepy Mondays for its existence, otherwise, crazy Fridays won’t be as crazy (even if it means it’s just you, your phone & Candy Crush Saga…and yes, it’ll be crazy because after spending days and days getting stuck in one level, you’ll finally be able to move on to the next) and happy weekends meant for oversleeping won’t be as precious if it didn’t have something like a miserable Monday to compare it with

Hello! We’re back from a weekend we spent otudoors!  It was a long 5-hour drive, 5-hour commute plus a 5-hour trek to our camping site but it was all worth it!  We rarely had a phone signal during the weekend and we didn’t have a decent internet connection either (Gahh..talk about priorities).  I actually thought I could upload a picture via Instagram when I reached the summit (which was 2 hours away from our camping site) but no-ho-ho-ho.  The weekend was in essence a social networking detox session.  I think it was an effective one because when I got back to the city, I was partly feeling grumpy & cynical: I started questioning why we’re all so obsessed with online life here and why I always have to spend hours and hours every week taking care of these two fictional pink & blue characters.  A part of me still wishes I could live here:

 We’re actually grateful that our guide was polite enough not to chuckle when we say things like, “Oh my! So, that’s how a potato plant looks like!!!”  I feel so embarrassed for having consumed sacks & sacks of potato in my life not even knowing where they came from or whow they even look like before they’re harvested. Oops.

Local Houses

I actually wanted to stay here longer so that I could take more pictures of the local life.  This place is so blessed with clean cool air with the scent of Pine trees!  Mt. Pulag is Luzon’s highest peak which makes it the second highest in the Philippines.  We were literally above the clouds and while everyone was suffering from the scorching heat of the sun back in Manila, we had to layer up and pretend it was winter time in another country!

This was the part of the hike where I was surrounded with trees & plants.  I showed this picture to our guide & he said that this was the poisonous kind.  Well, I wasn’t really planning to pick or eat them.  I just thought they were interesting drawing subjects. Haha.

I would stop from time to time while catching my breath.   A plant, a tiny creature or two would usually catch my attention.  Sometimes, I’d stay for a while and take more pictures than I want to but at certain times, I get too paranoid about mountain spirits probably watching me so I try to walk as fast as I can.  It may sound ridiculous & I’m not usually the one who believes in these things but when you’re all alone and the nearest person is x meters away and no one can hear you even if you scream, you’ll understand how I felt at that time! Apparently, the rest of the group had a moments of paranoia too!  The mountain just felt a bit enchanted

Thanks to the bit of alone time on the trail I started noticing everything–the diversity of the flora, the structure of the trees and how the leaves keep reaching for the skies, the orange stones and the leaves that turn from green to red at the tips and the huge dead earthworm which made us all run away (which was totally fun & senseless I know )

It was actually raining hard the night before until 2:30/3:00am which was the time that we were supposed to hike so that we can greet the sunrise at the summit.   We woke up  again at around 7:30am and it was still raining.  We have actually quite accepted that the weather was really bad and that we have to come back again late some time this year and hope that we’re lucky enough to see the its famous sea of clouds.   As we finished our breakfast, the skies just cleared up.  We were on our way to the summit in no time!

In the middle of nowhere, we actually felt like a bunch of hobbits.  We called the peak Mordor as it was a place that we can spot from the start of the hike.  I had a stick on my hand and I’d wanted to think of myself as (not-so) little Bo Beep who lost her sheep but Ponggo kept on calling me Moses.

As with all our other hikes, our toes weren’t spared.  Hello interesting looking decorated brown feet!  I don’t think anyone was lucky that day.  We all slipped.  I was just happy that when I did it was all grass & zero mud.  Hehehe.

Before I reached the summit, I just actually wanted to give up because I was already thinking about the 7-hour trek back to the ranger station.  I was already daydreaming about a zipline that could take us from the peak back to the start so that I didn’t have to walk anymore. Hehe.

Upon reaching the summit, we were all in awe of the place!  I wish I took a lot of photos so that I can give you a 360^o view of the whole place.  It’s just rare & amazing that we were above the clouds and that they kept on moving fast!  We all forgot about how tired we were or that just a few moments ago, we actually thought we saw the mountains and trees move by themselves because we were so hungry.

We actually want to go back to this place again late this year!  We’ve actually recommended this place to all our friends.  It’s not your most convenient vacation but everyone needs to detach themselves from the stresses of the city from time to time.  When you have nothing but the only basic necessities to help you survive, you’ll realize how uselessly preoccupied we all really are!

First off, we have Valerie Chua. I’ve been following her blog for a while now.   I actually joined her watercolor class last year & this year!  Haha.   Armed with a brush, she makes watercolor look so effortless while here I am panicking now and then blurting out a high panicky “Ahhhh!” when water runs on my paper where it’s not supposed to go. Hehe.

Lol. 

Valerie’s work has landed on several magazines & even made it to the cover of DPI Magazine in Taiwan!  She’s also the go-to artist of a number of broadsheets and magazines.

I don’t know how many times I’ve already recommended her Valerie Chua Watercolor Workshops to my friends & fellow Instagram addicts.  Then again, if you want to join, be sure to enroll as soon as you see the poster because the slots get filled up lightning fast!

A couple of years ago, I was so into designing things digitally and I was a bit paranoid that if I spent time doing things manually, it’ll eat up what could possibly be the time to develop my crude digital craft.  Apparently, taking up workshops like watercolor actually gave me an additional perspective on the origins of certain tools, how colors blend as well as how I can possibly merge handdrawn / hand-painted images with the final digital output.  

Meanwhile, we’re all just glad that Valerie has watercolor works in bite-sized pieces (i.e. signed postcards) for us to forever be inspired with! Hehehe

Next up is Aleyn Comprendio!  Last year, we’ve collaborated with Aleyn on this post and as I’ve mentioned before, this is one of my favorite collaborations since the pointers she has shared does not just apply to analog photography but to life or any form of art in general ❤

Aleyn recently came out with a set of postcards entitled Windswept Letters these are signed, limited edition postcards.  Aleyn is known for her dreamy photographs with muted colors and styled muses.  Each photo makes you want to just live inside that world and wish that it was just a sunny day forever!  It also makes you want to beg the question, “Where is this?? Please take me there!!”  It also makes you want to wear a wreath on your head and wear a dainty dress, stare into nothingness hoping that your pose is picture perfect.

I also enjoy the text & music that Aleyn always puts after each blog post and I’m actually guilty of overplaying her 8tracks playlists. Aleyn’s works has made it to several online & print publications as well as blogs and exhibits!

Actually, I’m not really on a salad diet.  Okay, I’m trying but with little success so far thanks to my very frail self-discipline.  However, diet or not, I just probably miss having fresh food ever since we had some super fresh veggies when we were out-of-town!   Ahh…I miss being able to breathe fresh air, hearing nothing but leaves instead of tense & angry vehicles and finally, fresh food!   Oh well. ‘Til our next adventure out of the city!

Last Friday, we got to catch Iron Man 3 at the Resorts World Manila thanks to Nuffnang Philippines & Sun Cellular Yeah!  If there’s one thing I love about Nuffnang, that’s getting tickets to the best movies all year round ! Doncha worry.  There are no spoilers here…or so I think.  I modified the iron suit so that it has boots (is that what you’re supposed to call them? Shin guards? Help!) and fantastic arms with palms that seemingly double as  flashlights.   I always wondered why my cousins enjoyed drawing superheroes when we were growing up and now I truly understand why And oh! I just found out today that Jarvis / J.A.R.V.I.S. stands for Just Another Rather Very Intelligent System a.k.a. some political systems I know *rolls eyes*.  Yeah..Sorry, I just came across that term a few hours ago and I’m probably the UNgeek of geeks in that sense So for all the Marvel fans, please don’t be such a Nazi if you get to find a loophole or two *holds up peace sign…runs away & hides*

…and may Tony Stark find his cookie.

While some people draw in red and black to express their darker emotions,  I don’t know what is it with me: for such a cynical, worrywart, eternally stressed & depressed individual, I always manage to churn out happy sappy colors, patterns & posts.  Doncha worry.   I won’t narrate to you the characters’ history as if I’m going to quiz you at the end of this post.   If you have more time, click here to read the rest of the story.  (Note Well: Brace yourself for a novel in blogging proportions.)

Well, this cake wasn’t supposed to be for the Googly Gooeys.  It was supposed to be for another project which I will be revealing soon.  However, the deadline has been postponed so I felt that I could play around with them paper cakes!  *Insert evil grin here.*  If you’ve been following @googlygooeys on Instagram, you probably already saw the cakes here & here. Yep.  It’s a cake alright but it wasn’t necessarily a piece of cake to make mostly because I had two other ideas before this which I spent so much time on and eventually rejected.  (Sadly, my biggest critic & enemy is myself.)   I initially wanted to make paper cupcakes which looked like a tiny village then paper macarons, paper plates and high tea stuff with muted, Victorian era inspired colors but no ho ho ho ho…I still ended up with bright colors–my first love.

I wanted to put the flaglets on the cake but then I ended up letting Tipsy & Ponggo hold them instead.  Ponggo thinks they look as if they’re starting some unknown revolution as we took turns in taking pictures of the plushies.  If you have keen eyes, you would’ve spotted the difference between the flaglet here & on the second picture

Ahh…Yes, I believe I have developed an addiction for those origami cubes. I know they’re not necessarily your typical ornament at home but it’s just fun to do and it’s a good way to add a pop of color especially if you think your TV is too black and that your wall’s too white! (Then again, it might just be me and my propensity to clutter every space with every bright color possible).

Yes, I know the yellow & black slice looks like an abstraction of cheese more than anything else and deserves a caption “Who moved my cheese?” instead of “Let them eat cake!”

Anyway, happy birthday to zem googly booglies! (Nope. That wasn’t a typo.)  Ahhh..Time flies (and that was totally a cliche).  When we were starting out,we didn’t actually know how this thing will turn out except that I just felt I wanted to do this and I wanted to share this with as much people as I can.  So, I guess, today is a bittersweet reminder for all of us to continue making time for the stuff that makes us happy.  :) Things may not make any sense in the beginning and it may not eventually be at par with society’s cookie cutter definition of happiness or success but we only have one life to live and nothing makes us feel more alive than doing the things we love. ?
